The Year of Why?

On so many levels, it seems appropriate to start with why. It’s a question I’ve been asked almost every day since Darwin started writing business a little over six months ago. Here are just a few of the reasons…

Because it’s fun.
Because it’s time.
Because there’s opportunity.
Because there’s tremendous need for a company like Darwin.

The last point is important—there’s tremendous need in the insurance industry for a company like Darwin. For several years I've heard with increasing frequency from many producers and colleagues in the industry that they need a market they can rely on; one they can count on to deliver when it matters. And, it matters that a company should be able to do it time and again, while responding with a sense of urgency, commitment, and compassion for their business. The people at Darwin embrace this approach, and we're pleasant to work with.

I know that a company like Darwin can rise to the challenge with the right people. We have a near perfect balance of complementary traits throughout the organization, and a clear focus on the “environmental factors” that shape our industry.

Literally, "Y"

Alleghany Insurance Holdings LLC, a subsidiary of Alleghany Corporation, is a great business partner. Alleghany is a multi-billion dollar NYSE-listed company, and they've been around for so long, their ticker symbol is one letter, “Y.”

With a diversified portfolio of long-term, strategic investments, Alleghany is focused on continuing to build a significant presence in the insurance industry. Alleghany hired Weston Hicks, the top insurance industry analyst worldwide (and former Chubb CFO), joining AIH executive, Jim Slattery, former deputy CEO and COO of Swiss Re America.

The pedigree that Alleghany, Weston, and Jim bring to the equation is exactly the type of DNA that serves as the foundational building blocks of Darwin. A long-term, strategic business plan was formed, and Darwin began writing business with its AIH sister companies on AM Best-rated A+ (Superior) paper. Darwin emerged in mid-2003 and continues steady, methodical growth.
