Vol. 1 No. 2, February 2004

Progress. People. Products. That pretty much sums it up since the last edition of Digital DNA hit your inboxes on January 29th. Darwin has been actively underwriting for nine months now and we’ve already seen more than 5,000 unique account opportunities. To say we’ve been busy is an understatement.

While Darwin may be a new company, the people at Darwin are not new to this industry. As you’ll see in the lawyers, insurance agents, and medical professional product pages of this edition, our underwriters have seniority in the business with an average tenure of 17 years each. The Darwin leadership team has a combined 157 years’ experience in the business. That can’t be interpreted any other way than we have what it takes to deliver.

As for our progress, here are a few quick stats:

1.) February marks Darwin's official launch into the lawyers professional liability (LPL) market. Our plan to roll out Darwin’s LPL capabilities later this year was moved ahead of schedule to capitalize on market opportunities. Follow this link for more info on our LPL program.

2.) We are approved in 42 states on a surplus lines basis. In the past month we wrapped up Utah, South Carolina, and Connecticut. Next on our radar screen is to finalize licensing in California and Massachusetts as soon as possible. Stay tuned.

3.) In the past six weeks, we’ve been hitting the pavement in major metros, meeting with more than 70 producers and clients. Next month we plan to be in the Chicago, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Atlanta areas. If you have account opportunities and are interested in arranging for a meeting with our underwriters, feel free to contact Fred Bautista at (860) 507-1048. He’s also “wired” with a Blackberry at fbautista@darwinpro.com.

4.) We’ve been laying the groundwork for two Darwin-owned and dedicated insurance companies. Darwin Select will be our surplus lines company. Darwin National Assurance will be our admitted one. In the meantime, we’ll keep writing business with our A+ (Superior) rated sister companies, Capitol and Platte River. We’ll keep you posted on our progress.

Our staff growth is steady with seven new team members since the year started. In the past three weeks alone:

• Stacy Cerruto joined our health care practice and will focus on E&O and D&O accounts.

• Jeff Hart joined us as E&O and D&O claims manager; Mari Spina (pronounced mah-dee) added an expert med mal claims management background; and Brenda Smith joined us with an exceptional policy and endorsement drafting background.

• Ray Spinelli joined our finance and accounting team, lending his expertise in the areas of statutory accounting, general accounting, and financial reporting.

• And, most recently, Lisa Nappi joined Darwin as my right hand person.

In January, Barbara Sinclair joined our health care practice, bringing more than twenty years' experience to our medical professional liability underwriting team.

The “insurance capital” has a wealth of talent, and Darwin is no exception. We have a great team of experts in every area of the company. Check out the group, and start putting some faces to the names you may already know, and some you’ve not yet met.

Sincerely,
P.S. If you missed the inaugural issue of Digital DNA last month, you can check it out here.
