With Health Care Consultants, Look Beyond "Patient Care"
Many insurance carriers tend to group a vast array of risks under the generic description, "health care consultant." From Darwin's perspective, however, health care consultants are unique. While a health care consultant is not actively engaged in diagnostic or direct patient care, the services they provide have some impact on the administration or oversight of medical care. As such, the common thread among health care consultants is that they have some contingent bodily injury exposure for which they need coverage.
Although consultants to health and medical facilities are the most common type of health care consultant, there are other classifications of risk that fit this segment. The list below is not all inclusive and is provided to illustrate the diversity of risks that are commonly categorized as health care consultants.
* Advertising or marketing health care services, including marketing research * Application and enrollment processing * Billing, coding, reimbursement, and repricing coding * Business plan development * Computer or software design and/or consulting * Consulting for self-insured plans * Credentialing or peer review for health plans * EAP services * Educational programming or seminars * Employee benefit service, consulting, or advice * Ergonomic consulting * Expert witness
* Hospital/health system/nursing home consulting * HR consulting * Independent medical exams * Insurance or reinsurance consulting * Loss control/risk management/QA/clinical improvement * Management consulting or administrative services * Medical record review * Network development/physician contracting * Public relations * Regulatory/compliance consulting * TPA activities (i.e., claims handling, submitting, adjusting, paying or processing) * Utilization review
